Hi! My name is Jim Johnson, and I serve as an Elder at SMCC. I was born in Enterprise, Alabama and grew up in the First Baptist Church. I was saved at an early age. I understood that I was a sinner and needed a savior. I accepted Jesus as my Lord by faith and never really had a time of significant doubt or separation from the church. But, I did not fully understand the importance of growing in my relationship with God until I was in my late 20s. Becky and I were invited to a Navigator Bible study by members of our Sunday School at our church in San Antonio. As we were urged to spend daily time in the Word and in prayer in addition to our time in worship each week, we began to grow in that relationship.
Over the next thirteen years, the Lord gifted us with five children, all adults now with an age range of 27 to 40 years. I am a physician (ICU and lung specialist), and I finished a twenty year career in the US Army and moved to UAB where I have been for the last 23 years. The Lord has given me some ability to teach and to lead, and those are the type of tasks that I have gravitated toward as I have walked with Him over the years.
Some days, and hopefully more often as I get older, I do these things unto the Lord and less out of habit or to meet expectations or to impress someone. That is much more important than any title on the resume or the praise of man. The Lord has been so good to me, and I want to glorify Him and not myself. Thank you SMCC for being the church for me these 23 years, and thank you Lord for leading us here.
